I carve each flag using a couple of different tools early in the process. I look at A LOT of real flags and try to mimic the wavy patterns I see in real flags. I don't use any wavy flag templates, I just go carve what feels right at that moment. Therefore, each flag is different.
True, there are many wavy wooden flags on the internet for purchase. However, it's very rare to find flags like the ones I make. Nearly all of those flags have only a slight burn to highlight the grain but it leaves the wood smooth. This also makes it easier for those flags to have the stars painted or even be vinyl stickers. Those types of flags can be made quickly in large quantities. My flags have raised wood grain, a time intensive step. Therefore, I have to carve each and every star by hand, another time intensive step. My flags are rare and can not be made quickly.
I've considered adding a shopping cart to help with purchasing, but that seems so impersonal and rushed. I want to communicate with each customer and make every order a personal experience. After all, I make each flag to order anyway. If you're wanting to order a flag or even thinking about ordering a flag, just contact me and we'll discuss it. Hit the little text icon button seen at the bottom right of every page or use the "Contact Me" section.
Yes, I served for 21 years active duty in the US Navy. I spent a lot of time working with submarines and deployed more that once with the Marines. I've spent time in MANY countries including Yemen, Djibouti, Afghanistan, Kenyan, Russia, Turkey, etc, etc... and I can say without question that the US is a great country and I am proud to make these flags.
The time for me to make these flags varies with each style, that's why each style has a different price. The stars alone take me at least 7 hours and requires a lot of concentration from me. Therefore, I can only work on them for a couple of hours at a time, usually the stars take me about 3 days. The "Rustic Natural" style takes me about 14 hours total and the XL RWB takes about 22 hours total.
I don't have a physical store. I only have a workshop. You can order my flags by contacting me through this website. However, 2 stores in Lyons, Colorado carry some of my flags. You can see some of my flags at these 2 stores: www.ParroutDesigns.com and www.HJBDesigns.com.
This may sound corny, but my favorite flag is whichever flag I happen to be working on. I make each flag, one at time from start to finish then begin the next one. This might not be the most efficient way to make them but I have found that by making them this way I can really focus and concentrate one each one I make. I have tried to make 2 or 3 at the same time, but I get more satisfaction from making 1 at a time...and that one is always my favorite.
The short answer is, you can't directly leave a review on my website. I control everything on this website and I don't want to give any appearance of altering or manipulating reviews. Yes, this means I don't get very many reviews, but so be it. Reviews can be left at either my Facebook page or my Google page and then those reviews are automatically populated onto this website.
No, I don't currently make anything else besides flags. I enjoy making these flags and actually find it challenging, rewarding and relaxing. Who knows, I might make something else someday.
